How towing capacity works.
Always stay within the manufacturer's maximum tow rating and hitch rating too — GCWR is only one of several limits. Tongue weight should be 10–15% of the trailer weight for stable towing.
Frequently asked questions.
What is GCWR?
Gross Combined Weight Rating — the maximum total weight of your fully loaded truck AND fully loaded trailer combined, set by the manufacturer. Exceeding it strains the engine, brakes, and transmission.
What is tongue weight and why does it matter?
Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer puts on the hitch — ideally 10–15% of trailer weight. Too little causes dangerous trailer sway; too much overloads the rear axle.
Can I tow at my maximum capacity?
It's best to leave a margin. Towing near the limit increases wear, reduces braking performance, and hurts fuel economy. Many experts suggest staying under 80% of your max rating.
